Solution

To allow a proper connection, you can manually edit a preference file to match y
our ISP's requirements.

Important: The following steps describe an advanced technique, using the command
line in Terminal.
Review the instructions before you begin. If you are not comfortable following t
hese instructions, you
should seek assistance. Inappropriate changes to the preference file could preve
nt system features
from working properly.

Follow these steps: Open Internet Connect.

From the File menu, choose New VPN Connection.

Choose PPTP, and click Continue.

Enter the address and login information for your account.

At the top of the Internet Connect window, locate the PPTP connection that appea
rs furthest to the
right. This is the one you just created. If you have more than fit in the window
, click the arrow at the
right (Figure 1). Be sure to note its name, which you will need for reference in
a moment. Depending on
how many PPTP connections you have made, the name will vary. It may be "VPN (PPT
P) 3", for example.

Open Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/)


Press Return. You will be prompted for your administrator password. Type it, and
press Return.

The preference file opens in the pico text editor. Use the arrow keys to scroll
to the name you gathered
in Step 5. It should be inside a "key," similar to this example:

<string>VPN (PPTP)</string>


Now scroll up to the first PPP dictionary above this name. It looks like this ex
ample:

<dict>

.....
<key>CCPEnabled</key>
<integer>0</integer>
.....
.....
</dict>


Change the integer value beneath "CCPEnabled" key to "0", as in the example abov
e.


Press Control-X to exit the pico text editor.

Restart the computer.


Notes The change is persistent.

This PPTP connection must be used only to connect to the ISP for which you confi
gured it.

If you need an additional VPN PPTP connection, you must create a new one using I
nternet Connect.
